1.Prag Mahal
Prag Mahal is a 19th-century palace located in Bhuj, Kutch, Gujarat, beside the famous Aina Mahal. It was commissioned by Maharao Shri Pragmalji II, a ruler of the Jadeja dynasty known for his modern and progressive vision.
The construction of Prag Mahal began in 1865. The palace was designed by Colonel Henry St. Clair Wilkins, a British engineer. After the death of Maharao Pragmalji II in 1875, the construction continued and was finally completed in 1879 during the reign of his son, Maharao Khengarji III.
Local Kutchi craftsmen, known as Gaidhars or Mistris of Kutch, played an important role in building the palace. Their skilled hand-carved stonework gives the palace its unique character. Historical records state that these artisans were paid in gold coins, showing the high value placed on their craftsmanship.
Architecturally, Prag Mahal reflects a blend of European and Indian styles. It shows influences of Neo-Gothic, Italian Gothic, and Romanesque architecture, combined with Indo-Saracenic elements and traditional Kutchi artistry. The palace was built using Italian marble and sandstone from Rajasthan, along with rich stone carvings and decorative jali work.
One of the main attractions of Prag Mahal is the Durbar Hall, decorated in a European style with classical design elements. The palace also has a 45-foot-high clock tower, from where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Bhuj city. Other notable features include Corinthian-style pillars, European motifs in stone carvings, and a small beautifully carved temple located in the courtyard behind the palace.
The total cost of constructing Prag Mahal was about 3.1 million rupees, making it one of the most expensive royal buildings of its time in the region.
Today, Prag Mahal stands as a strong symbol of Maharao Pragmalji II’s vision of modernization and remains one of the most important heritage monuments of Kutch, attracting visitors interested in royal history and architecture.
